Prophets in the Quran: Nuh

Eman Mahmoud

22 Mar 2018

Prophet Nuh or Noah is one of the greatest prophets in history. There are about ten generations between Nuh and Adam. After the death of Adam, people started to create statues of good people, who used to live among them before their death, and worship these statues, believing that these will protect them from evil. They even gave them names; The disbelievers of his time used to say, “never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr,” [Nuh, 23].

In the Quran, there is a whole chapter named “Nuh” that tells the story of the prophet. Allah says, “Indeed, we sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment," [Nuh, 1]. The main mission of prophet Nuh was to deliver the message of believing in one God, but people rejected this message. Allah says, “The people of Noah denied the messengers,” [Ash-Shu’ara, 105], “They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned." [Ash-Shu’ara, 116], and “Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss,” [Nuh, 21].

Nuh prayed to Allah to destroy all disbelievers. Allah says, “And Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant,” [Nuh, 26]. Allah answered the prayers of Nuh and instructed him to build an ark as Allah says, “And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are [to be] drowned," [Hud, 37].

Nuh started to build the ark under the mockery of his people and, when he finished, Allah ordered him to wait for his oven to overflow as a sign to take his family, the few believers who followed him, and two mates from each living creature with him on the ark. Allah then sent the flood, and all the disbelievers were drowned including the wife and one son of Nuh. After that Allah ordered the Earth to calm down for the ark to land and then Nuh released all the creatures to inhabit the land and start life anew.

It is noted that all people were drowned in the flood and only the descendants and followers of Nuh survived as Allah says, “And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth],” [As-Saffat, 77], so Nuh is considered to be the father of mankind. For the rest of his life, he worshiped Allah and asked his sons to follow the path of Allah and avoid shirk (polytheism) and following Satan.
