Prophets in the Quran : Idris
21 Mar 2018
Among the first prophets sent after Adam, is Idris. Allah says, “And mention in the Book, Idrees. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a high station,” [Maryam, 56, 57], “And [mention] Ishmael and Idrees and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient,” [Al-Anbya, 85].
Idris or Enoch—probably comes from the word study—was the first man to be given prophethood after Adam and Seth. He was born 100 years after the death of Adam and considered to be the first person to learn how to write, sew clothes, and have knowledge of astronomy and arithmetic. It is believed that Allah revealed thirty portions of His Scriptures to Idris.
Though there is not enough information about Prophet Idris in the Quran as he was only mentioned in these two verses, it is known that he was born and lived in Babylon and was from the sixth generation descended from Prophet Adam. He was sent to people because some of them deviated from the path of God and started to worship others. Prophet Idris then moved with his followers to Egypt and continued to preach the religion of Allah and monotheism asking people to do good deeds.
His death was a controversial issue among scholars as some believed that he was sent immediately to the paradise and did not die based on what Allah says, “And We raised him to a high station,” [Maryam, 57], while others believed that he was sent to the fourth heaven according to what was narrated of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when he saw Prophet Idris during the Mi’raj as the Prophet said: "When I was brought up, I saw Idris in the Fourth Heaven," [Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, 3157].
Still, the truth is only known by Allah Almighty, and whatever speculations we have, concerning the life and death of this great prophet from the ancient records, are all subject to doubt.
AL-Isra' Wa Al-Miraj II (The Night Journey and Ascension to Heaven)
In the second part of the journey, which is called Al-Miraj, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) met the Prophets as well as angels in heaven. Unusually for him, he saw Gabriel in an angel form, having six hundred wings, although he used to see him as a man when he was sent to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a revelation of Allah, in accordance with what mentioned in the Tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): " and then Gabriel brought me a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk. I chose the milk, and GaREAD MORE
