The Holy Month of Ramadan II

Eman Mahmoud

30 Jul 2018

Significance

Ramadan is a precious month in which Allah Almighty sends his blessings to all Muslims all over the world. But what is so special about this month that we all wait for from year to year. The answer is found in the Quran when Allah says, “The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺” [Al-Baqarah, 185].

The Quran

One of the miracles sent by Allah in this month is the Quran. It’s the spiritual guide Allah sent to Prophet Muhammad in order to lead all Muslims over time towards the right path, Allah says, “And this [ Qur'an] is a Book We have revealed [which is] blessed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy,” [Al-An’am, 155].

The Night of Decree

This night is very important to all Muslims because it is the night in which the Quran was sent down, “Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree,” [Al-Qadr, 1]. Prophet Muhammed used to observe I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan and say, “Seek Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree) in the odd nights out of the last ten nights of Ramadan,” [Al-Bukhari, 1192]. This night apart from any other night is very peaceful and it is the time in which the angels and spirits descend to Earth. It is reported that the Prophet used to say at this night, “O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me,” [At-Tirmidhi, 1195]. He also said, "Whosoever performs Qiyam during Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), with Faith and being hopeful of Allah's reward, will have his former sins forgiven,” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim, 1189].

Chained Devils….Opened Heavens

Another significance of this month is that the gates of Jannah are open, so Allah forgives all sins. The Messenger of Allah said, “When Ramadan begins, the gates of Jannah are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained,” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim, 1220]. Allah sends his blessings to all Muslims during this month, so those who seek forgiveness should return to Allah for his mercy.
