Prophets in the Quran: Salih

Prophet Salih was sent to people of Thamud, a tribe who started to worship idols, nearly 200 years after Prophet Hud. Like, the people of ‘Aad, those of Thamud were strong and wealthy, and they inhabited a place called Al-Hajr, which is now said to be in Saudi Arabia. Salih was good, kind, and wise; he was respected by his own people. He had only one mission which was to call his people to worship Allah. Allah says, “And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive”," [Hud, 61].

It was not strange that the message of Salih was rejected by his people, and they even asked for a sign to prove his prophecy. Prophet Salih then prayed to Allah to send a miracle for them to believe; so Allah answered his prayer and made the mountain split to show a she-camel; Prophet Salih told them, “This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign; so leave her to eat within Allah 's land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment,” [Al-A’raf, 73].

Nevertheless, while some of them believed, most repelled the sign; Allah says, “And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning,” [Al-Isra, 59]. The disbelievers hated the camel and believed that she was taking portions of their water; therefore, they decided to kill her. In the Quran, it was mentioned that they wanted first to kill Salih and his family, but Allah destroyed all their plans. After killing the camel, Salih got angry and warned them of Allah’s punishment.

Three days later, they heard a massive thunderbolt from the sky with a hideous earthquake that took everything. It destroyed everyone in Thamud except Salih and his followers who left before the punishment day to another place and lived peacefully worshipping Allah. Allah says, “Then look how was the outcome of their plan - that We destroyed them and all their people,” and “And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah,” [An-naml, 51, 53].

Surat Al-Bakarah is the second and longest chapter or surah in the holy Quran. It has 289 verses, 6,201 words and 25,500 letters. Its name ‘Al-Bakarah’ means The Cow. The recitation of Surat Al Bakarah has many benefits for Muslims, the most important of which is that Surat Al Bakarah protects those who recite it from the devil and the evil eye. It is known to ward off the devil from the house in which it is recited for three days.
